When I think of Japan, Tokyo is generally the first image that comes to mind. A fascinating mix of modern and traditional, it is a city that always seems to be changing and always on the move.

Then there is Kyoto, with its temples, gardens and geisha districts; Osaka, famous for its food and lively personality; and Hiroshima, whose history makes it one of Japan's most meaningful places to visit.

But Japan is so much more than its famous cities.

In fact, Japan is made up of 14,125 islands. Most of the population live on the four main islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, with Honshu being the largest and home to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and many of the country's best-known destinations.

And while Japan's major cities are absolutely worth experiencing, they can also be crowded.

For travelers who prefer a little more elbowroom, one of my favorite ways to experience a different side of Japan is by small ship.

Why see Japan by small ship?

Japan's geography makes it particularly well suited to cruising. Instead of repeatedly packing and unpacking, navigating train stations and changing hotels, your ship becomes your home base.

By day, explore smaller ports, historic towns, gardens, castles, shrines and local markets. In the evening, retreat to the intimacy of a smaller ship, relax over dinner and wake up the next morning somewhere new.

Even better, smaller ships can include ports that don't always appear on the traditional first-time Japan itinerary.

Here are a few worth discovering.

Hakodate - Hokkaido

Located on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, Hakodate was one of Japan's first ports to open to international trade in the 19th century. That history left the city with an interesting blend of Japanese and Western influences.

Explore the historic Motomachi district, wander the morning market or head up Mt. Hakodate for wonderful views over the city and surrounding water.

Hokkaido itself offers a different side of Japan—more open spaces, mountains, forests and outdoor experiences than many visitors associate with the country. It is also an important place to learn about the Ainu, the Indigenous people of northern Japan.

Kanazawa - Gardens, Samurai and Geisha

Kanazawa is one of those places that seems to contain many of the things travelers come to Japan hoping to experience—without being Tokyo or Kyoto.

Its best-known attraction is Kenrokuen, considered one of Japan's three great landscape gardens. Once the private outer garden of the powerful Maeda clan, it was developed over generations and is beautiful throughout the year—from plum and cherry blossoms in spring to colorful maples in autumn and snow-covered pines in winter.

But don't stop at the garden.

Kanazawa is also known for its traditional arts and crafts, the atmospheric Nagamachi Samurai District, historic geisha districts, Kanazawa Castle and fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan. It was an important cultural center during the Edo period and remains particularly interesting for travelers who enjoy art, history and craftsmanship.

Sakaiminato - Gateway to ancient Japan

Small fishing ports can be one of the pleasures of a small ship itinerary, and Sakaiminato is a good example.

The port is known for excellent seafood, but it is also a gateway to some fascinating sights in the surrounding region.

Nearby Matsue Castle is one of only 12 Japanese castles with an original surviving keep—and one of only five designated a National Treasure. Completed in the early 1600s, its dark exterior has earned it the nickname "black castle."

Another possible excursion is Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's most ancient and important Shinto shrines and a place deeply connected to Japanese mythology.

It's a wonderful area for travelers interested in Japan's spiritual traditions and samurai history.

Kitakyushu - Castles, gardens and toilets!

Located at the northern tip of Kyushu, Kitakyushu offers an interesting mixture of history, nature and modern Japanese industry.

Kokura Castle dates to the beginning of the Edo period, although today's castle keep is a reconstruction. The surrounding grounds and Japanese garden make this an enjoyable stop, particularly during cherry blossom season.

If your timing is right, there is also the spectacular Kawachi Wisteria Garden, famous for its tunnels of cascading purple, white and pink wisteria. Blooming season is generally in spring, and because it has become extremely popular, advance planning can be important.

And then there's something completely different.

Ever wonder how the Japanese toilet became the technological wonder it is today?

Visit the TOTO Museum. Yes, an entire museum devoted to toilets, bathrooms and the evolution of Japanese sanitation technology. Only in Japan—and exactly the kind of quirky stop that can make a trip memorable.

Takamatsu - Gardens, Islands and Udon

On the island of Shikoku, Takamatsu is another appealing port for travelers who enjoy gardens and traditional Japanese culture.

The highlight is Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's finest landscape gardens, with ponds, bridges, carefully manicured pines and views toward Mt. Shiun.

Takamatsu Castle is also unusual. Built beside the Seto Inland Sea, it was one of Japan's few seaside castles, with seawater flowing directly into its moat.

And you can't visit this part of Shikoku without trying Sanuki udon.

Thick, chewy udon noodles are a local specialty, served everywhere from simple neighborhood noodle shops to more elaborate restaurants. Sometimes the simplest local food experiences become the ones you remember most.

Takamatsu is also a gateway to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, adding another dimension to a small ship itinerary through this part of Japan.

Kobe -Beef, Sake and mountain views

Kobe is certainly not a tiny port, but it has a different feel from nearby Osaka.

The city was dramatically rebuilt following the devastating Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995 and today is an attractive cosmopolitan city tucked between the mountains and the sea.

And yes, there is Kobe beef.

But Kobe is also an excellent place to discover sake. The Nada district is one of Japan's most important sake-producing regions, where breweries take advantage of high-quality local water and a long tradition of sake making.

For something completely different, head to Arima Onsen, one of Japan's oldest and most famous hot-spring towns, located on the opposite side of Mt. Rokko from central Kobe.

Shimizu - Come for Mt. Fuji

On a clear day, the views can be spectacular.

One of the best vantage points is the Nihondaira Plateau, overlooking Suruga Bay with Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. Another iconic view can be found at nearby Miho no Matsubara, where pine-covered shoreline frames Japan's most famous mountain.

Of course, Mt. Fuji makes its own schedule. Clouds don't care that your ship is in port for only eight hours!

But when the mountain does appear, it can be one of those unforgettable travel moments.

A Different Way to Experience Japan

For a first trip to Japan, I wouldn't necessarily skip Tokyo or Kyoto. They are famous for good reason.

But I also wouldn't assume that Japan begins and ends with its major cities.

A small ship itinerary can combine some of the country's famous highlights with places you might never have considered visiting on your own—small fishing ports, beautifully preserved castle towns, islands, gardens, shrines and communities where the pace feels completely different.

Tokyo may introduce you to Japan.

But sometimes it is the quieter ports in between that help you really get to know it.

And for travelers who prefer discovering a destination with a little more elbowroom, that may be the best reason of all to see Japan by small ship.

When is the best time of year to take a European river cruise?

I get this question quite often. The answer? It really depends on you - what your schedule allows, the type of experience you want and understanding the advantages and disadvantages that each season brings. There really isn't a perfect month.

Every season has something different to offer.

SPRING
Spring in Europe (March–May) can be chilly and rainy, especially early in the season. Pack layers and be prepared for changing weather.

River levels can also run high after heavy spring rains or snowmelt. Rivers originating in or fed by the Alps, including the Rhine and Rhône, can be affected. Occasionally, high water creates navigation issues — including making it impossible for ships to pass beneath certain bridges.

On early-season departures, you may also encounter crew members who are just beginning their season together. Service can still be very good, but the entire team may not yet have settled into the rhythm they will have later in the year.

But spring has plenty going for it.

Days are getting longer, crowds are generally smaller, and Mother Nature is waking up. Trees and flowers are blooming, creating beautiful landscapes along the rivers.

April in Austria's Wachau Valley can be spectacular when the apricot trees are in bloom. And late March into April brings one of Europe's great spring experiences — the tulips and other spring flowers at the Netherlands' famous Keukenhof Gardens.

Best for: Spring flowers, cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and travelers who don't mind packing a few extra layers.

SUMMER
Summer — June through August — is one of Europe's busiest travel seasons. It's also the warmest.

And yes, Europe can get hot.

I've sailed the Rhône in late June/early July and experienced temperatures over 110°F. Those temperatures aren't the norm, but European heat waves have become something travelers need to be prepared for.

Early summer can be particularly beautiful in Provence, with lavender season generally beginning in June and continuing into July, depending on the location and that year's weather.

The trade-off for the heat and crowds? Long days.

You'll have plenty of daylight for sightseeing, cafés stay busy well into the evening, towns come alive and summer festivals abound. Packing can also be easier — no heavy coats and fewer layers to lug around.

Prolonged periods of hot, dry weather, however, can contribute to low river levels. Certain stretches of the Rhine and Danube are particularly sensitive, and low water can occasionally affect river-cruise operations.

Best for: Long days, warm weather, festivals and travelers who don't mind sharing Europe with more visitors.

FALL
September through November brings cooler temperatures, shorter days and — one of my favorite things — fall color.

The vineyards that cling to the hillsides along many European rivers turn shades of yellow, gold, red and orange. Add harvest season in Europe's wine regions and you have an entirely different atmosphere than you'll find during the summer months.

Crowds generally begin thinning as you move farther into fall, although September remains an extremely popular month for European travel.

Water levels can still be a consideration. After a particularly hot, dry summer, some rivers may remain low well into the fall. Rivers and individual stretches vary considerably, which is why there is no month that can guarantee "perfect" water levels.

By October and November, you'll want warmer clothing and layers, but for travelers who prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, the trade-off can be well worth it.

Best for: Fall colors, wine regions, harvest season, cooler weather and fewer crowds later in the season.

WINTER
Late November and December river cruises are a completely different experience.

This is Christmas Market season.

Cities and small towns throughout Europe decorate their historic centers with lights, Christmas trees and market stalls selling ornaments, crafts, regional foods, mulled wine and all sorts of holiday treats.

Expect cold temperatures and short days. Daylight is at its lowest, which can limit traditional sightseeing time, but Christmas Market itineraries are designed around the season. The markets aren't an addition to the trip — they're a big part of the reason for going.

Some river cruise lines are also beginning their European seasons earlier, with select sailings starting in February. Yes, it will be colder and the days shorter, but you'll experience Europe at a much quieter time of year and in a completely different way.

Best for: Christmas Markets, festive atmosphere, fewer tourists and travelers who don't mind cold weather.

What about river levels?

Here's the important thing to remember: River levels are unpredictable during any season.

Too much rain or rapid snowmelt can cause water levels to rise too high. Extended periods of hot, dry weather can cause them to fall too low. Either extreme can interfere with navigation.

And not every European river — or even every section of the same river — reacts the same way.

Certain portions of the Rhine and Danube are particularly well known for low-water challenges, while other European rivers and waterways are more controlled by dams, locks or tidal conditions.

Water levels also change constantly. A river that creates problems one week may be perfectly navigable after several days of rain. Conditions can even change significantly over the course of a day.

Cruise lines monitor water levels continuously and, when necessary, may alter docking locations, adjust an itinerary, transfer guests by motorcoach or, in more significant situations, swap passengers between ships.

There simply isn't a particular month that guarantees perfect river conditions. As they say, sometimes you just have to "go with the flow! Check out this short fun video from Tauck.

FARES

Generally, you'll find some of the most attractive fares and promotions during the early and late portions of the European river-cruise season, when temperatures are cooler and demand is lower.

May and September remain particularly popular months because of their combination of generally pleasant weather and good sightseeing conditions, and fares can reflect that demand.

But river-cruise pricing has become increasingly dynamic. The cruise line, itinerary, ship, cabin category, how far in advance you book and current promotions can all have as much impact on price as the month you choose to travel.

So I wouldn't choose a departure based on season alone.

MY FAVORITE TIME?

I personally prefer Europe's traditional shoulder seasons — April, early May, late September and October — with fall being my favorite.

Why?
Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, beautiful fall colors and, often, more bang for your buck.

But that's my perfect time.

The best time for you to take a European river cruise is the time that best fits your schedule, travel style, needs and wants.

Spring flowers? Long summer days? Fall vineyards? Christmas Markets? Each season gives you a different Europe. I'm here to help you decide which one is right for you.

Off Greece's southeastern coast of the Greece mainland lies one of the most beautiful island groups in the Mediterranean—the Cyclades. Absolutely.

In fact, these days I recommend it whenever possible.

Whether I'm traveling for a week or nearly three weeks, I almost always take one carry-on suitcase and one personal item—a backpack or bag that slides over the suitcase handle.

After years of traveling throughout Europe, Antarctica, South America, Australia, New Zealand and countless river and ocean cruises, I've become convinced that traveling lighter makes the entire journey easier.

No waiting at baggage claim.

No worrying about lost luggage.

My Two Go-To Bags

I have two favorites.

22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on for trips lasting two to three weeks.
Slightly smaller 14 x 14 x 9-inch bag for one-week trips or destinations where I know I'll have easy access to laundry.

For shorter trips, the smaller bag has become one of my favorites. As airlines continue to fill overhead bins, the smaller size slips into tighter spaces much more easily.

The Secret? Pack for One Week (max 10 days).

This is the biggest mindset shift. Whether your trip is 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days...

Pack for one week.

Ask yourself this: Do you remember exactly what you wore last Tuesday? Neither will anyone you meet on your trip.

Most clothing can easily be worn multiple times.

Jeans or casual pants: 4-5 wears
Shirts: rotate throughout the week - can be worn 2-4 times (especially if you layer with an undershirt)
Add a lightweight laundry detergent sheet or use your hotel's laundry service halfway through longer trips

A quick sink wash or one load of laundry often gives you another full week of clothing.

Build a Coordinated, Mix and Match Wardrobe

This will be the single biggest space saver.

Choose one basic color palette—perhaps navy, black, gray, or tan—and make sure every top works with every bottom. I generally aim for about three tops for every bottom, then mix and match throughout the trip.

You'll be surprised how many different outfits you can create without packing nearly as much as you think you need. Accessories like scarves, lightweight sweaters, or jewelry can completely change the look without taking much space.

Shoes: Less Is More

Shoes consume more luggage space than almost anything else.
I typically bring:

One comfortable pair of walking shoes
One pair of sandals or casual shoes
Occasionally a third pair if the trip truly requires it

The trick? Wear your bulkiest shoes while traveling and pack the lightest pair.

Your suitcase will thank you.

Your Personal Item Works Hard. My backpack carries everything I want easy access to during travel:

Passport and travel documents
Toiletries and medications
Electronics, chargers, power bank
Kindle or reading material
Camera
Lightweight jacket
Refillable water bottle (empty through security)
Snacks (packaged or ones I will eat before arrival - make sure they are allowed through customs. Never fresh fruit.)
Change of clothes (shirt, underwear)

Having these items with you also means you're prepared if your flight is delayed or your suitcase must be gate-checked.

What About Toiletries?

Today's TSA liquid rules still apply - I stick with travel-sized containers or solid alternatives if possible. I've started to look at shampoo and conditioner bars and solid sunscreen to save space while eliminating worries about liquid limits.

For longer trips, I can replenish supplies along the way. Maybe not the same brand, but nearly everything you use at home can also be purchased overseas. That said, travel sized toiletries last longer than you may think.  Check out this article for guidelines.

I've Learned Something Every Trip

After every journey, I look back and ask myself: "What never left the suitcase?"

There's almost always something.  Those items come off the packing list for next time. Every trip helps me pack a little smarter.

Traveling Lighter Means Traveling Easier.  Packing light isn't about sacrificing comfort.
It's about gaining freedom.  You'll move through airports faster, navigate train stations more easily, walk those charming cobblestone streets without wrestling oversized luggage, and spend less time managing your suitcase—and more time enjoying the destination.

One of the most powerful of these places is Normandy, France.

Stretching along 54 miles of coastline on the English Channel, Normandy is forever linked to one of the most significant events of World War II. Today, its beaches are peaceful and picturesque, but on June 6, 1944, they became the setting for the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Known as D-Day, Operation Overlord involved more than 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops who landed on five beaches—Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Facing heavily fortified German defenses, Allied forces suffered tremendous casualties. Omaha Beach alone saw approximately 2,400 American soldiers lose their lives on that day. Yet despite the losses, D-Day marked a turning point in the war and is widely regarded as the beginning of the end of Nazi occupation in Western Europe.

MOSTA DOME

During an air raid in 1942, a bomb pierced the church dome while hundreds of worshippers attended mass. Miraculously, the bomb failed to explode, and no one inside was injured. A replica of the bomb can still be seen inside the church today.

The ancient walled city of Mdina was Malta’s capital long before Valletta existed. Often called the “Silent City,” Mdina is a beautifully preserved maze of narrow streets, noble palaces, churches, and medieval architecture.

As I re-read this article from 2018, I realized something interesting - very little has changed... except for one thing: the popularity of small ship cruising has grown exponentially.

While still somewhat under the radar compared with the mega ships dominating cruise advertising, the appeal of what I like to call elbowroom inspired travel - experiences away from the crowds, with fewer people and more authentic destinations - has clearly struck a chord with today’s travelers.

River cruising continues to surge. Expedition cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in travel. Even luxury hotel brands are entering the space, adding small ship yachts to their portfolios.

The desire is simple: Travel experiences that feel more personal, immersive, and connected.

Why Small Ship Cruising Has Such a Loyal Following

Full disclosure: the largest cruise ship I have sailed on carried about 2,500 passengers. I truly enjoyed that cruise, and for that particular itinerary it was a great fit.

But these days, like many seasoned travelers, I find myself naturally drawn toward smaller ship experiences.

Why?

Because with smaller ships, it’s all about the experience.

More intimate environment

One of the things many people love about cruising is meeting new people—learning about where they are from, hearing their travel stories, and exchanging ideas about where to go next.

Personally, I find this fascinating. Over the years I’ve made some wonderful—and lasting—friendships while cruising.

A charming town located approximately 30 minutes from our Rhine River cruise stop in Breisach, Colmar is considered to be one of the prettiest towns in France. Intrigued by this description, and wanting an opportunity to photograph half-timbered houses, I decided to take this optional tour, despite a little bit of rain. This tour did not disappoint.

Colmar was like stepping into the pages of a fairy tale.

Our walking tour, led by a very enthusiastic local guide, took us through the various districts of Old Town. It was quite interesting learning about the various trades that took place in the different districts (for example the Tanning District where leather was made). The town's architecture was amazing (it really did make me feel like I was in a Brothers Grimm fairy tale) and equally interesting in how certain features defined how well off the tenants were. The Little Venice area was most certainly "photography heaven".

We had about an hour on our own after the tour - enough time to get in some additional pictures, explore some of the boutique food shops and sit down for a beverage, but a few more hours would have been perfect. That said, I had no trouble finding their special Munster cheeses, freshly made macaroons and Alsace wines to take back to have on board ship.

Colmar has an interesting history. Founded in the 9th century, the town (and area) has been largely under French control. However, as a result of the Franco-Prussian war, Colmar was annexed by the German Empire between 1871-1919 and incorporated into the Alsace-Lorraine region. It returned to France in 1919 but was re-annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940. It went back under French control in 1945.

The area today is a delightful blend of French and German influences. While I heard mostly French being spoken by the locals, Germany was most definitely represented, predominantly in the area of food, such as the local specialties sauerkraut and flammkuchen (fresh out of the oven below!) being served in the the traditional Winstubs.

Storks are an important part of the Alsace folklore and history, so much so that nests are built on top of the churches for them. We were quite lucky to see this one. While you can't see it in this picture, this stork was feeding his/her babies!

Beautiful half-timbered houses and quaint cobble stone streets and alleys.

Colmar is the birthplace of sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the Statue of Liberty. His home today houses the Musee Bartholdi (museum dedicated to his work). Another famous sculpture of his is the "Little Vintner".

Loved the architecture and quirkiness!

Colmar was very fortunate in that much of its Old Town escaped damage during the wars. The buildings are well preserved and draw tourists from all over Europe and the world. Half-timbered houses, cobblestone alleys, rich history, amazing cuisine and Alsace wines - a stroll through the town is well worth your time, rain or shine!

Travel has always had its challenges, but in recent years flying has become noticeably more stressful—even for seasoned travelers.

Record travel demand, weather disruptions, aircraft shortages, air traffic control delays, crowded terminals, and ever-changing schedules can make air travel feel less like the start of a vacation and more like an endurance test.

If you find yourself feeling anxious, frustrated, or simply exhausted before you even reach your destination, you're not alone.

The good news? A little planning can go a long way toward making the journey smoother.

Cancellations, delays and fear of missing your flight
Why it's stressful: Weather events, air traffic control delays, equipment issues, and tight schedules can create a domino effect throughout the day. One delay can quickly turn into a missed connection or an unexpected overnight stay.

How to make it easier:

Book early-morning departures whenever possible. The first flights of the day are generally less affected by delays.
Avoid the last flight of the day, especially on regional routes with limited backup options.
Choose nonstop flights whenever practical.
If a connection is necessary, build in plenty of time. I generally recommend at least 90 minutes for domestic connections and 2–3 hours for international connections.
Travel midweek when possible to avoid peak crowds and congestion.

Pro Tip: If a delay causes you to miss a connection, use the airline's app immediately. Often you can secure a new flight before reaching the customer service desk.

Crowded airports and full flights
Why it's stressful: Travel demand continues to be strong, and many airports are operating near capacity. Long security lines, crowded gate areas, limited seating, and full flights can make the experience feel overwhelming.

How to make it easier:

Avoid peak travel days when possible.
Consider airline credit cards that provide priority boarding and preferred seating.
Check whether your credit card includes lounge access.

Pro tip: Once through security seek out a quieter gate area or lounge where you can relax before boarding.

Inconsistent communication and technology issues
Why it's stressful: Airline apps are helpful—but they're not perfect. Gate changes, delays, and updates don't always appear immediately.

How to make it easier:

Download your airline's app and enable notifications.
Monitor airport departure screens in addition to your app
If something doesn't seem right, ask the gate agent.
In many European airports, gates may not be posted until 60–90 minutes before departure, so don't panic if your gate isn't showing yet.

Pro Tip: Screen shots of your boarding pass and itinerary can be helpful if you lose the printed copy or your phone freezes.

Baggage Stress:
Why it's stressful: Delayed luggage, limited overhead bin space, and crowded baggage claim areas can add another layer of uncertainty to travel.

How to make it easier:

If checking a bag, pack a change of clothes, medication and key items in your carry-on.

Pro Tip: Take a picture of your luggage before check in for easier recovery if it is lost.

Security Screening Woes
Why it's stressful: Long lines, secondary bag inspections and pat downs can add unnecessary anxiety.

How to make it easier:

Invest in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry for faster screening.
Pack liquids and electronics so they are easy to access.
Wear minimal jewelry to speed up the process.

Pro Tip: Arrive early so you can breeze through without the panic.

Weather - The Factor nobody controls
Why it's stressful: Unlike many travel disruptions, weather cannot be fixedby the airline. Storms, hurricanes, snow events, fog and high winds can affect flights across entire regions.

How to make it easier:

Monitor weather forecasts before departure.
If a major weather event is expected, explore alternative flights before everyone else does.
Consider arriving a day early for cruises, tours, safaris, and other important departures.
Purchase travel insurance to protect your investment and provide assistance when disruptions occur.

Pro Tip: Sometimes the best solution is being proactive rather than waiting to see what happens.

Pack these habits for a smoother trip:

Book early-morning flights.
Avoid tight layovers.
Fly midweek or off-peak dates.
Download airline apps for real-time updates.
Be proactive. Check weather prior to your trip. If the possibility of cancellation is high due to a weather event, many airlines will try to reroute you or allow you to fly on a different day.

Explora Hotel Rapa Nui is a small boutique, all-inclusive luxury lodge 20 minutes from the main town of Hanga Roa. Located in a remote area of the island, it truly is a tranquil, restful retreat - especially after a busy day exploring the island.

Upon arrival in Easter Island, a driver was waiting for me and other arriving guests after I collected my baggage. I was cheerfully greeted by Renate the guide and welcomed with a beautiful flower lei. Our driver George was also welcoming.

At the hotel, Mahanua, the Guest Experience Manager, personally greeted and welcomed us and quickly helped us check in and get settled in our rooms.

Her Welcome note was an especially nice touch!

Despite the walls of the room being plain concrete (as were the floors), I found the rooms to be welcoming, warm and very comfortable. Decor was simple yet just right for the environment - the views amazing and most important - so QUIET! Not once did I hear a neighbor or anyone around... except when I opened the window I did hear the rooster crowing at sunrise!

The main gathering spaces were also simple, welcoming and comfortable. The views to the East over the ocean made for incredible sunrise views.

Food was quite good. The menu was not huge but not having a large number of choices was actually quite nice. There was enough variety - fish, meat, vegan, etc. They served lovely Chilean wines but all beverages were included (all day) so whatever your preferences, they accommodate. And the butter came in the form of Moai!

The property is stunning, the staff friendly and professional, and being all-inclusive is worth the value. But what sets this property apart are the included excursions.

Each day you have a choice of AM and PM excursions (or an all day excursion) ranging from easy to moderate or strenuous activities. Van rides, hikes, biking, snorkeling, boat rides - many to choose from. Last count about 30 different ones. And they become private if you are the only one interested in that particular one - they don't move you to another one. All of my guides were wonderful.

My understanding is no other property on the island includes active excursions - most are all van trips.

Shortly after lunch on arrival day we all went to Ahu Tongariki - the platform with the 15 Moai. No other visitors - just the 5 of us. Perfect after a long flight. And we ended the day with a "sundowner" - they offered beverages and snacks (fruit, cheese, crackers) to hold us until dinner.

On day 2 I tried the more strenuous hike option in the AM (yes it was strenuous - 6 miles uphill) - the Birdman Walk through the cow fields up to the volcano. In the PM most of joined the easy Rano Raraku tour which took us to the quarry where the Moai were carved. Day 3 AM had me on an easier hike along the coastline which ended at King's Landing. The beach was wonderful. In the afternoon I opted for the easier tour which included exploring 1 of 3 lava tubes. One cave was enough! It became a private tour which made for wonderful one on one conversations with my guide. I could have gone snorkeling the morning before my flight but chose to simply relax.

Explora has a number of properties in addition to Easter Island - three in Patagonia (Torres del Paine Park and El Chalten), two in the Atacama Desert and one in Peru. Based on my experience in Easter Island I would highly recommend looking into these properties as well.

The overall experience from start to finish - simply top notch. Highly recommend it.
