As I re-read this article from 2018, I realized something interesting - very little has changed... except for one thing: the popularity of small ship cruising has grown exponentially.

While still somewhat under the radar compared with the mega ships dominating cruise advertising, the appeal of what I like to call elbowroom inspired travel - experiences away from the crowds, with fewer people and more authentic destinations - has clearly struck a chord with today’s travelers.

River cruising continues to surge. Expedition cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in travel. Even luxury hotel brands are entering the space, adding small ship yachts to their portfolios.

The desire is simple: Travel experiences that feel more personal, immersive, and connected.

Why Small Ship Cruising Has Such a Loyal Following

Full disclosure: the largest cruise ship I have sailed on carried about 2,500 passengers. I truly enjoyed that cruise, and for that particular itinerary it was a great fit.

But these days, like many seasoned travelers, I find myself naturally drawn toward smaller ship experiences.

Why?

Because with smaller ships, it’s all about the experience.

One of the things many people love about cruising is meeting new people—learning about where they are from, hearing their travel stories, and exchanging ideas about where to go next.

Personally, I find this fascinating. Over the years I’ve made some wonderful—and lasting—friendships while cruising.

Smaller ships make this even easier.

On a mega ship, you may pass the same people once or twice during a week-long sailing. On a small ship, you quickly begin to recognize many of your fellow travelers. Conversations start naturally, friendships form easily, and even the crew becomes part of the experience.

It creates a welcoming, almost community-like atmosphere on board.

Here’s a myth worth clearing up.

Many people assume that small ships—especially luxury or river cruises—are formal, stiff, or even a bit pretentious.

If you enjoy dressing up for dinner, you certainly can. But if that’s not your style anymore (or never was), you’ll feel perfectly comfortable.

Some cruise lines even allow nice jeans at dinner, and on expedition cruises you might show up straight from a day of exploration in shorts.

Boarding is quicker. Getting on and off the ship is easier. Dining tends to be open seating or single seating rather than multiple large dining rotations. You won’t find long buffet lines or packed lounges where people scramble for seats during port talks or evening cocktails. There’s room on the sun deck. Quiet corners to read. Cozy lounges to relax.

In other words--plenty of elbow room.

Perhaps the biggest reason travelers choose small ship cruising is the destinations.
Large ships are limited to major cruise ports that can accommodate thousands of passengers.

Small ships can go almost anywhere.

Instead of visiting the same well-known ports on a typical Alaska itinerary, imagine exploring hidden fjords where whales feed and glaciers calve.

A charming town located approximately 30 minutes from our Rhine River cruise stop in Breisach, Colmar is considered to be one of the prettiest towns in France. Intrigued by this description, and wanting an opportunity to photograph half-timbered houses, I decided to take this optional tour, despite a little bit of rain. This tour did not disappoint.

Colmar was like stepping into the pages of a fairy tale.

Our walking tour, led by a very enthusiastic local guide, took us through the various districts of Old Town. It was quite interesting learning about the various trades that took place in the different districts (for example the Tanning District where leather was made). The town's architecture was amazing (it really did make me feel like I was in a Brothers Grimm fairy tale) and equally interesting in how certain features defined how well off the tenants were. The Little Venice area was most certainly "photography heaven".

We had about an hour on our own after the tour - enough time to get in some additional pictures, explore some of the boutique food shops and sit down for a beverage, but a few more hours would have been perfect. That said, I had no trouble finding their special Munster cheeses, freshly made macaroons and Alsace wines to take back to have on board ship.

Colmar has an interesting history. Founded in the 9th century, the town (and area) has been largely under French control. However, as a result of the Franco-Prussian war, Colmar was annexed by the German Empire between 1871-1919 and incorporated into the Alsace-Lorraine region. It returned to France in 1919 but was re-annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940. It went back under French control in 1945.

The area today is a delightful blend of French and German influences. While I heard mostly French being spoken by the locals, Germany was most definitely represented, predominantly in the area of food, such as the local specialties sauerkraut and flammkuchen (fresh out of the oven below!) being served in the the traditional Winstubs.

Storks are an important part of the Alsace folklore and history, so much so that nests are built on top of the churches for them. We were quite lucky to see this one. While you can't see it in this picture, this stork was feeding his/her babies!

Beautiful half-timbered houses and quaint cobble stone streets and alleys.

Colmar is the birthplace of sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the Statue of Liberty. His home today houses the Musee Bartholdi (museum dedicated to his work). Another famous sculpture of his is the "Little Vintner".

Loved the architecture and quirkiness!

Colmar was very fortunate in that much of its Old Town escaped damage during the wars. The buildings are well preserved and draw tourists from all over Europe and the world. Half-timbered houses, cobblestone alleys, rich history, amazing cuisine and Alsace wines - a stroll through the town is well worth your time, rain or shine!

I was first “introduced” to the Marquesas Islands back in 2002—courtesy of one of the earliest seasons of Survivor. I use the word introduced lightly. It was television, after all, and reality TV at that. Still, those dramatic landscapes—raw, wild, and impossibly beautiful—left a lasting impression. Even then, I knew this was a place unlike anywhere else in the South Pacific.

The Marquesas are part of French Polynesia, but in nearly every meaningful way, they stand apart from the more familiar islands of Tahiti. Located more than 900 miles from Papeete (nearly four hours by air), the Marquesas remain remarkably untouched. They’re often described as Hawaii 100 years ago—rugged, remote, and refreshingly unpolished. That isolation has preserved a distinct language, culture, and identity. While politically part of Tahiti, the people here are not Tahitians. They are proudly Marquesan

This sense of difference has long drawn creatives and adventurers. Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jack London all spent time here. Paul Gauguin chose Hiva Oa as his final resting place. Even the modern word tattoo traces its roots back to the Marquesas, where intricate body art remains a powerful expression of identity. Men and women alike wear their tattoos with pride—and with purpose. And just like that, the intrigue deepens.

My own exploration of French Polynesia took place aboard the Paul Gauguin, a cruise I would happily repeat. Windstar and Silversea Cruises also sail the region year-round. They all primarily explore the Society Islands, with extended itineraries a few times each year reaching the Marquesas, Fiji, and other far-flung archipelagos. Enter the L'Aranui 5 (and in 2027 the L'Aranoa).

Approximately 20 times a year, the Aranui 5 sails round-trip from Papeete to the Marquesas, carrying vital freight along with its passengers. Along the way, it stops in the Tuamotu Islands en route to the Marquesas, visiting major islands such as Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa, Ua Pou, Ua Huka, Tahuata, and Fatu Hiva, with Bora Bora appearing on the return. The company has also expanded into discovery itineraries to the Austral, Society, Pitcairn, and Gambier Islands—these sailings operate without freight but retain the same spirit of exploration.

The ship delivers essential supplies to the islands—everything from food and building materials to vehicles—and returns to Tahiti carrying local products. Explora Hotel Rapa Nui is a small boutique, all-inclusive luxury lodge 20 minutes from the main town of Hanga Roa. Located in a remote area of the island, it truly is a tranquil, restful retreat - especially after a busy day exploring the island.

Upon arrival in Easter Island, a driver was waiting for me and other arriving guests after I collected my baggage. I was cheerfully greeted by Renate the guide and welcomed with a beautiful flower lei. Our driver George was also welcoming.

At the hotel, Mahanua, the Guest Experience Manager, personally greeted and welcomed us and quickly helped us check in and get settled in our rooms.

Her Welcome note was an especially nice touch!

Despite the walls of the room being plain concrete (as were the floors), I found the rooms to be welcoming, warm and very comfortable. Decor was simple yet just right for the environment - the views amazing and most important - so QUIET! Not once did I hear a neighbor or anyone around... except when I opened the window I did hear the rooster crowing at sunrise!

The main gathering spaces were also simple, welcoming and comfortable. The views to the East over the ocean made for incredible sunrise views.

Food was quite good. The menu was not huge but not having a large number of choices was actually quite nice. There was enough variety - fish, meat, vegan, etc. They served lovely Chilean wines but all beverages were included (all day) so whatever your preferences, they accommodate. And the butter came in the form of Moai!

The property is stunning, the staff friendly and professional, and being all-inclusive is worth the value. But what sets this property apart are the included excursions.

Each day you have a choice of AM and PM excursions (or an all day excursion) ranging from easy to moderate or strenuous activities. Van rides, hikes, biking, snorkeling, boat rides - many to choose from. Last count about 30 different ones. And they become private if you are the only one interested in that particular one - they don't move you to another one. All of my guides were wonderful.

My understanding is no other property on the island includes active excursions - most are all van trips.

Shortly after lunch on arrival day we all went to Ahu Tongariki - the platform with the 15 Moai. No other visitors - just the 5 of us. Perfect after a long flight. And we ended the day with a "sundowner" - they offered beverages and snacks (fruit, cheese, crackers) to hold us until dinner.

On day 2 I tried the more strenuous hike option in the AM (yes it was strenuous - 6 miles uphill) - the Birdman Walk through the cow fields up to the volcano. In the PM most of joined the easy Rano Raraku tour which took us to the quarry where the Moai were carved. Day 3 AM had me on an easier hike along the coastline which ended at King's Landing. The beach was wonderful. In the afternoon I opted for the easier tour which included exploring 1 of 3 lava tubes. One cave was enough! It became a private tour which made for wonderful one on one conversations with my guide. I could have gone snorkeling the morning before my flight but chose to simply relax.

Explora has a number of properties in addition to Easter Island - three in Patagonia (Torres del Paine Park and El Chalten), two in the Atacama Desert and one in Peru. Based on my experience in Easter Island I would highly recommend looking into these properties as well.

The overall experience from start to finish - simply top notch. Highly recommend it.

Charming Villages
Provence boasts some of the most beautiful hilltop villages in all of France. They date back hundreds of years and were originally built to defend the area. Besides the charm, the views are simply stunning. The villages of Luberon, including Gordes and Roussillon, are the most famous. Les Baux-de-Provence (you must check out Les Carrières de Lumières) and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence are also ones steeped in history and should not be missed.

Colorful Markets
Vibrant markets in Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and almost all cities, towns and villages across the region offer fresh local produce, local delicacies, warm breads and pastries, flowers, plants and artisans. Amazing for all senses.

Stunning Landscapes
Provence is well known for its beautiful and iconic lavender fields, especially around Luberon, Valensole and the Sénanque Abbey. Come in June to experience them in full bloom. Calanques National Park boasts dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise waters between Marseille and Cassis, perfect for hiking, swimming, and boating while Verdon Gorge, often called Europe’s Grand Canyon, offers breathtaking views and opportunities for kayaking and hiking.

Rich History and Culture
Provence provides many reminders of the Roman Era. Explore ancient wonders like the amphitheater in Arles, the Pont du Gard aqueduct, and the Roman theater in Orange (Hint – Orange is not as well known and often missed, however the experiences are second to none and without the crowds.).

The Palace of Popes (Palais des Papes), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a former residence of popes (no, they did not always live in the Vatican). It has quite the history and is worth a visit.

Follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh, Cézanne, and other artists inspired by Provence's light and landscapes. Our walking tour in Arles took us past the scene of Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night painting. I don’t believe the scene has changed much after all these years.

Exquisite Cuisine and Wine
Enjoy local specialties, including ratatouille, bouillabaisse, tapenade, and Provencal rosé wines. Being close to the sea you’ll also find amazing fish options.

You can also discover and enjoy renowned wine regions like Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes de Provence. Many of the wineries are small – thus when visiting you often have the opportunity to meet and chat with the owner or winemaker directly. Note – end of September and October is harvest season and many may not be open to the public or will have limited accessibility.

Also highly recommended – a cooking class – prepare and enjoy a feast from local delicacies. Book early – these experiences are popular.

Seasonal Festivals
Provence is a year round destination, with festivals in every season. Horse shows and car rallys take place in January. The Arles' Feria de Pâques is a traditional Easter festival featuring bullfighting and regional culture. The Les Bontanilles, a flower festival, takes place in Luberon each Spring. Lavender Festivals celebrate the lavender harvest in the summer. A world-renowned performing arts festival held every July at the Avignon Theater Festival. Jazz and blues festivals take place in the fall, Black truffle festivals in November and Christmas markets in December. There are many more that take place.

You can witness penguins waddling across the ice, sea lions basking on the shore, and massive humpback whales breaching in the Southern Ocean. The pristine waters around Antarctica are rich in marine life, and birdwatchers will enjoy spotting species like skuas and albatrosses soaring overhead. Wildlife highlights: See emperor penguins, the largest penguin species, in their natural habitat, watch playful seals and pods of orcas from your expedition ship and spot humpback and minke whales during a Zodiac boat excursion. Penguins were definitely on my list to see in Antarctica. I saw my share - thousands! What I didn't realize was just how fun they are to watch. Most of us agreed we could take a seat, watch them for a few hours and be perfectly happy.

My itinerary went into the Antarctic Sound and Paradise Bay. Simply beautiful - especially Iceberg Alley.
