For The First Time In History, More Than Half Of U.S. Travel Agents Are Home Based This was the headline and article on January 30, 2017 in Travel Market Report. I'm not at all surprised and find it rather exciting, but this may be a surprise to many who are unaware that travel agents still exist. There have been big changes in the travel business over the past twenty years, exponentially so in the last five, and this is just one of those industry shifts. Travel professionals are still in the business and doing very well! I changed my career from corporate life to travel entrepreneurship a few years ago and never gave it a second thought of having a home based business. A good number of brick and mortar shops are still around, however with most clients reaching out to us via the internet or phone (and much of our work being done the same way), a storefront isn't always necessary or cost effective. And with clients all over the country, it isn't always practical either. Without the direct visibility of a storefront, it is challenging to let people know you exist. But we are here, some 30,000+ strong according to Phocuswright (a global travel research company), and it says something when the growth within the industry is coming from independent, driven, professional, home based entrepreneurs.
