5 Must See Places In Western Australia

Picture
Australia's largest state, WA for short, stretches over a third of the nation, borders two oceans and has more pristine beaches than any other state.  And with only 10% of the nation's population, it is far less crowded than Australia's eastern states.

Nature and aquatic wildlife, pioneer history, Aboriginal Australia and food, wine and beer experiences are just a few reasons that attract visitors to WA.

NINGALOO REEF

North of Perth lies Australia's Coral Coast, 680 miles of  white beaches, easy going coastal towns and the world's largest fringing reef, Ningaloo.  Every year between March and August, whale sharks congregate in this region, offering locals and visitors alike a once in a lifetime experience swimming  with gentle giants of the sea.  What makes this marine experience even more exceptional are the manta rays, dugongs. dolphins, turtles, humpback whales and 500+ species of tropical fish.

PERTH

A visit to Western Australia will undoubtedly include Perth, Australia's 4th largest metropolitan area.  The sunniest capital in Australia, Perth is a vibrant city with a penchant for the outdoors and plenty of experiences for a wide variety  of tastes.

Check out Fremantle's award winning boutique craft breweries, raise a glass in Western Australia's oldest wine region, the Swan Valley, take a day trip out to Rottnest Island (more on that below) or enjoy the pioneer history in the Avon Valley.  All easy day trips from Perth.

ROTTNEST ISLAND

Rottnest Island, totally car free, sits just off the coast from Perth, and is home to the happiest animal on earth.  Read more about Rottnest and this little fella here.

MARGARET RIVER

Margaret River is one of Australia's premium wine regions, with 220+ producers and 100 cellar doors.  In fact, 25% of Australia's premium wines are produced here.   With so many varietals to choose from, including Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Carnelian, Rosé, Moscato, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, you can't go wrong.   I'm told the Cabernet Sauvignon is especially wonderful and every bit as good as the more famous Bordeaux region.

Beyond the wines, foodies can enjoy the Gourmet Escape, a food and wine festival held each November that includes an extraordinary  line up of international and local chefs and culinary delights - an event and experience not to be missed if you are in the area.

Margaret River also has spectacular walking and hiking trails, including the Cape To Cape Walk, a guided  four day walk complete with incredible food experiences and luxury accommodations.

BROOME AND THE KIMBERLEY REGION

Spread across the north-west portion of Western Australia, the Kimberley is a remote region filled with epic landscapes,  ancient rock formations (like 2 billion years old!), dramatic colors, beautiful gorges, horizontal waterfalls and some of Australia's oldest rock art galleries, believed to be the oldest in the world.

Broome, on the western edge of the Kimberley, is a great starting point for those planning a more in-depth exploration of the area..  A beach resort town, Broome is well known for its pearls and Cable Beach,  a 13 mile stretch of heavenly beach.  And don't miss the spectacular sunsets!
