The first type: Soft adventure - casual ships with fewer than 100 guests.  Food is great, cabins are comfortable and functional. The focus is on experiences off the ship, where nature and wildlife rules.  Experiences are active but not so much that you have to be an in shape sports buff - beach walks, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling or simply observing the marvels of Mother Nature are part of a typical day.  ​

I categorize this under Adventure as well as it is so very different from a typical cruise.  Half cargo, half cruise ship, the Aranui 5 sails through the Society, Austral and Tuamoto Islands, bringing needed goods to the islands and bringing back products for export.  Guests enjoy the opportunity of meeting locals and exploring less visited islands in one of the most beautiful areas of the world.  This cruise is perfect for the culture seekers - so much to experience and take in on this adventure and most excursions are included.

The third type of adventure cruise really isn't a cruise.  It's an adventure sailing.  A four or five-masted clipper ship has you following traditional trade wind routes, exploring both iconic and small, off the beaten path ports of call in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas and along the coast of Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.  Simple, laid back fun on the seas.  Nothing else like it.
