For years I had heard about this beautiful garden near Amsterdam. Friends and colleagues considered Keukenhof a "must see" experience. But I never understood why. I love flowers, but really, what was the big deal? The pictures I had seen just didn't register until I personally walked the gardens last month while on my Rhine River cruise trip. The park is located about 45 minutes outside of Amsterdam and is one of the world's largest and most beautiful flower gardens. Open to the public between mid-March and early May when the flowers are in full bloom, approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted each year, so you can imagine how impressive this is. Located on 79 acres, a stroll through the park makes for a wonderful half day experience. I spent approximately two and half hours walking the gardens, but could have easily spent more time taking in the sheer beauty surrounding me. Not just outdoor gardens, Keukenhof also has multiple pavilions with spectacular displays of flowers and plant shows. Two of the more popular ones are the Wilem-Alexander pavilion which displays over 300 varieties of lilies, and the Beatrix Pavilion, which has been reserved specifically for orchids. Words really can't describe this amazing display. Now that I have experienced Keukenhof, I can truly understand the why. Whether you simply like flowers or if you are a true lover of flowers (you can name all the varieties shown here), a walk through these gardens will definitely be a highlight on your Spring visit to Amsterdam, a Rhine River cruise or a Tulip Time cruise. The beauty of the park, the fresh smell of flowers and the amazing displays will bring memories of a lifetime. What are you waiting for? Let's get started on your vacation today!
